When Armand Gamache is asked to provide security for a lecture at a nearby university, he thinks it will be a nonevent. Until he investigates the nature of the lecture and the repulsive agenda of the speaker. When the university refuses to cancel the event, the views of the speaker begin to seep into village, residents are pitted one against another in a type of madness.
