Clara Kelley, working in stern and exacting Mrs. Carnegie's house under false pretenses, finds that her determination and understanding of business make her a valuable asset to the household, even as she struggles to fill the role of ladies' maid meant for the deceased woman she impersonates. Weaving her way through social landmines, Clara quickly becomes useful to the family, even striking up a risky friendship with one of the sons, future industrial titan Andrew Carnegie.
