During World war II in rural, Midwestern Hannah, Joanna Elaine Grey and her new best friend Gretchen Bocher grow up together, experiencing new friendships and young love. When a local church sponsors the relocation of a Japanese-American family, the girls look forward to helping them adjust to life in the Midwest but learn firsthand the evils of prejudice and the illogical thinking that springs from hate and fear.
