Juan, Jared, and Antonio, all between fourteen and sixteen, face decades in prison. To pass the time, they sign up for a screenwriting class and collaborate on a short film about their lives, including Juan's unrequited love for his childhood friend, Abigail. Halfway through the class, Antonio returns to juvenile court and gets released with time served. Back home, he struggles to avoid the same patterns that first got him locked up. An examination of America's juvenile justice system, as told through the stories of three male teenagers incarcerated in Southern California: Juan, a young father who faces deportation after a murder conviction; Jarad, who went on a shooting spree that paralyzed a woman; and Antonio, a meth addict accused of two attempted murders. Their meetings with a screenwriter who works with them on making a movie-within-a-movie helps them deal with their difficult experiences. ~ Violet LeVoit, Rovi
